584th Engineer Company

The 584th Engineer Company (Clearance) "Wooly Bullies" was activated at Fort Hood on 16 October 2007 and was first assigned to the 8th Engineer Battalion.

In xx, the 584th Engineers was relieved from the 8th Engineer Battalion and assigned to the 20th Engineer Battalion. This reorganization renewed the strong association between the 584th and 20th Engineers, as the Vietnam-era 584th Engineer Company (Light Equipment) was attached to the 20th Engineers for most of the Vietnam War. It was in Vietnam that the company picked up the nickname "Wooly Bully" from the popular song of that era. Throughout Vietnam the company left its signature, such as Camp Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully Quarry, etc.

In January 2010 the 584th Engineers deployed to Afghanistan as part of the 20th Engineer Battalion. Click the streamer below for more information about the 20th Engineers in Afghanistan.

This is a note from Dick Zolnowski:
THIS IS, I BELIEVE THE ORIGIN OF THE WOOLY BULLY ..THAT"S ME, PFC DICK ZOLNOWSKI IN AUGUST OF 65 WHEN THE SIGN WAS ORIGINALLY MADE BY MY COMRADES. WE WERE AT CAM RAHN BAY AT THE TIME. WE LANDED AT CAM RAHN IN JUNE OF 65 AFTER LEAVING SOME TROOPS OFF AT DA NANG,AFTER A 29 DAY "CRUISE" FROM THE STATES WHERE THE SHIP BROKE DOWN ALMOST EVERY DAY (I CAN STILL HEAR THE SHIP"S PA SYSTEM, "OVERTON TO THE ENGINE ROOM".) THE FINAL BREAKDOWN CAME JUST AFTER WE CROSSED THE INTERNATIONAL DATE LINE AND WE WAITED TILL 2 ICE BREAKERS TOWED US TO SUBIC BAY WHERE WE PARTIED FOR A DAY THEN CHANGED SHIPS TO THE WILLIAM BARRETT TO CONTINUE ONTO NAM.
